DO YOU AGREE THERE'S A BETTER WAY TO KEEP COMMUNITIES SAFE
THAN MASS INCARCERATION?
PARTNER WITH US.
The goal of the "In a Whole New Way" documentary aired on select PBS stations in 2023 is to build support for giving many of those who break the law a real second chance—through a reformed probation function that rehabilitates rather than serving as a staging area on the way to lockup. After all, our country was founded as a second chance. And many of us believe in the spiritual power of redemption. Probation as practiced in locales such as New York City—as portrayed in the film—is more effective, less costly, and more humane, than prison.

Undoing a scornful media depiction of probation, as shown in and by the documentary, is a whole new way to such reform. The photographers shown in the film pioneered this path—only to find themselves transformed in the process. Their inspiring story has warmed hearts across the political spectrum and around the world.
